Hierarchy of Distractions

Okay, I'm sick of saying I need to blog more. This is a terrific little diagram which must have been created in lieu of the designer doing any actual work - gold ...

Capturing the moment with the Dalai Lama

I found myself at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition centre this morning with my brand new toy - the Canon 7D.  A crowd was gathering to glimpse His Holiness the Dalai Lama as he was leaving the morning session of "Awakening the Mind".  I installed myself in a little alcove underneath a sign along the exit path, hoping to catch a shot using the video mode.

I wasn't expecting what happened next - His Holiness saw us sitting there, thought it was funny and came to say hello.  It was wonderful to see his face light up with playful mischief as he pulled one of his fans closer from the very back.

It's certainly not the best footage but it did capture the moment and now it's being shared online.  With technology advances and social media more and more people are going to be able to share their stories.

It's something we're hoping to tap into with one of my clients during the 2010 Sydney Festival.

Here are some of the social platforms we're hoping you'll participate in and contribute to ...

Google launches Social Search

@mattcutts describes how the new Social Search feature works. You first need to add your social profiles (blog, twitter, facebook, etc.) to your Google profile. Then activate the social component in all searches.

Google Wave explained in 2 min

Great little cartoon explaining the basics of Google Wave. It's also ...

- an open platform, allowing you to install your own (internal) server
- collaborative plugin in enabled (voting, translation, mapping, video conf, and much more)
- a lot faster now it's out of the dev sandbox
- a lot more stable - the Wave team must not have left the Google Plex for a while
- multi platform (Chrome, Firefox, Safari - OSX & Windows)
- surprisingly iPhone friendly

Now just waiting for those invites to propagate ...

Cooliris | Embed the photo wall

I've been a long time fan of cooliris - now it looks like there's a flash version you can embed directly into your site.

TweetDeck improves photo sharing and launches a Directory

There's a new release of TweetDeck today (v0.30.5) which adds a couple of important features ...

Drag and drop photo sharing ...

And a categorised Directory of people to follow ...

I hope this helps people realise value from twitter quicker than following random people.

Bing is gaining market share - really?

I read this article on Mashable claiming that Microsoft's Bing is the fastest growing top 10 search engine and extolling 5 reasons to switch from Google.  I'm all for healthy competition and diversity and it had been about 6 months since I had given MS the benefit of the doubt so I tackled a current problem - which airport to fly into for a Melbourne trip - Avalon or Tullamarine?

First bing ...

Car rental, a weather station in SA and Naked DSL - riiight ...

Let's give Google a shot ...

First result looks promising - oh look, it's user generated content which in a few minutes helped me make an informed decision.

I'm sorry MS - the only way I'm going to switch is if you start providing a better service.  I have tried other searches and the results just aren't as useful as Google's.  As for those market share numbers, I'm sure my trial is now counted amongst them but I'm no convert.
